You can teach kids to read in a few easy steps.

  1. Help your child with recognising all the letters and their sounds. We have found that repetition is an amazing way to develop recollection while reading. As well, watching videos, such as LeapFrog Phonics Farm, will help your child learn the alphabet and phonics in a fun and interactive way.

  2. Teach your child the difference between consonants and vowels. We like to start with the short vowels because it is easier for children to understand.

  3. Introduce your child to blends (2 letters put together to make a sound). Great blends to start with are consonant and vowel blends. This will help your child begin to put sounds together for a word.

  4. Once your child has mastered blends (which will take a while), start to introduce small words. The best words to begin with are CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. If your child practices some words everyday, then they will be able to read the words with ease.

  5. After your child can read most 3 letter words you give them, they are ready for sentences. Short sentences with 4-5 words are the best to begin with.

  6. If your child practices a little bit of reading sentences everyday they will develop the skills they need to read larger books.

These are just a few steps to start your child on their journey of reading. If you feel like your child needs a little extra help, we have an amazing program for you. Our Reading Readiness program is for students in JK-grade 1 that desire to learn how to read. We have seen great improvements in all of the children that have participated in the class.
